To me, this is what my life and career are all about—giving back, making an impact, bringing communities together, and effecting change. That’s why I put together the BOY MEETS GIRL® “Live Out Loud Campaign” with Cassandra Bankson, a YouTuber who’d been bullied for her acne and whom I’d cast in several of my fashion shows. Together, Cassandra and I brought more awareness to the National School Climate Center’s BullyBust program, as I’d done with Sammi Hanratty prior. Cassandra’s advice for other young men and women who endure bullying is: “Surround yourself with people who understand your insecurities and support you regardless. It’s okay to be nervous at times, but you have to summon the courage from within to overcome your fears. Even if you don’t feel beautiful on the outside, remember that it’s who you are on the inside that really matters. And if you stay true to yourself and stand up for what you believe in, the bullies will back down.”

For the campaign, we asked people to use the hashtag #BMG LiveOutLoud on social media to share their “Live Out Loud” moment. The entries were everything from stories about overcoming bullying to those who’d come out as gay or transgender and even people who’d, sadly, considered suicide. It spread quickly on social media, which meant that there were tons of responses and, of course, we wanted to pick everyone. Unfortunately, we couldn’t do that, but we did select one individual from each state and a few other countries, and they then filmed their narratives, which we turned into a mash-up video of their collective experiences. It was so inspirational to join forces with Cassandra in this new capacity of giving a voice to people who’d endured so much. We actually ended up inviting the winners to another fashion show that Cassandra walked in for me and, through that, we continued to create this unbelievable community of support.
